The Actors Theatre Workshop
Founded over two decades ago by Thurman E. Scott, The Actors Theatre Workshop is an established pioneer in non-profit theatre committed to producing classical and contemporary plays, developing new dramatic works, training and developing actors, writers and directors, while making a difference in the lives of homeless children and the community at large.
The Builders of the New World:
A Community Building and Educational Program

This extraordinary nineteen year old theatre and mentorship program brings together professional theatre artists and business professionals to provide children residing in transitional housing facilities in Manhattan with a clean, stable environment, reading, writing and presentation skills, and the creative tools to look beyond their current challenges to a future of dignity and promise.

“Jennifer teaches the whole world about love... When she sees a person who needs love, someone who is poor and alone, she hugs them...”
Sherelle Denise Walker Vaughn - Age 10
“Welcome to the Learnbratory, where all people of all shapes and sizes can learn how to work with computers... You should come.”
Spirit and Vision of Our New Community

“The New Twin Towers” by Candice Crosby - Age 9
Homeless children created these spectacularly moving and imaginative works in a process led by ATW’s Artistic Director, Thurman E. Scott, who taught them his original creative techniques to develop the imagination. Armed with paper, crayons and writing tablets, the children explored age-old issues of violence and peace, freedom and responsibility, justice and compassion.

Participating in this exhibit provides the young artists with valuable educational skills and a sense of ownership of one of New York City’s leading cultural institutions at a time when they are experiencing instability in their lives. This exhibit and The Builders of the New World represent one element of the Actors Theatre Workshop’s overarching mission of using theatre to address the conflicts of the community, reveal new insights and bring forth hope.
